The Spice Girls Could Have Had An Animated Film (But It Never Happened)

July 2024 ยท 5 minute read

The 1990s spawned some iconic artists in a wide variety of genres. Channels like MTV showcased everything, such as popular grunge bands like Alice in Chains, R&B like TLC and Boyz II Men, and of course, pop thanks to individual artists like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, as well as a plethora of boy and girl groups like 98 Degrees, S Club 7, B*Witched and Backstreet Boys.

Holding their own in the saturated market was none other than the Spice Girls, who had their own unique style and marketing, which highlighted incredibly different and individual personal styles for each of the girls, and a nickname to fit the image.

Scary, Sporty, Posh, Ginger, and Baby Spice appealed to a huge audience worldwide and ultimately took the world by storm during the 1990s. While the girls have, for the most part, move on from their time together as a girl group, they do occasionally get together to work on projects, like surprise shows and performances, but one confirmed project has yet to get its feet off the ground.

The Spice Girls Were The Ultimate '90s Girl Group

Very few pop girl groups amassed the success and popularity that the Spice Girls were able to achieve during their heyday. It all started with an audition of around 400 girls where Mel B, Mel C, and Victoria, also known as Scary, Sporty, and Posh Spice, were discovered.

A secondary audition followed which lead to Geri, or Ginger Spice, being added to the group. The four girls along with Michelle Stephenson, the fifth member at the time, were all moved into a home to undergo what is essentially pop star training. It was quickly figured out that Michelle was not a good fit, and eventually, Emma, or Baby Spice, was brought in.

The five young women clicked instantly and showed a fierce sisterhood and comradery that is now a huge and well-known part of their brand. The Spice Girls empowered young children the world over to believe in themselves, girl power, and friendship through positive messages in their music, and each one had a different personality that appealed to a wide audience.

Their popularity led them to have a variety of merchandise including stickers, trading cards, dolls, lollipops, clothing, and more along with brand deals, massive cassette tape and CD sales, and incredible stage shows during their tours.

A Campy Spice Girls Live Action Film Already Exists

One of the most popular things the Spice Girls have done throughout their career is release the incredibly campy but fun Spice World The Movie. The mockumentary-style film is a huge cult classic among Spice Girls fans and follows all five members as they drive around London in their double-decker tour bus leading up to their first live show.

Alongside Mel B, Mel C, Emma, Geri, and Victoria stars Meatloaf as their bus driver, Alan Cumming as Piers, a filmmaker that was attempting to follow the girls around record their antics, and Richard E. Grant as Clifford, the Spice Girls manager in the film.

Spice World The Movie features the band's core values of friendship and girl power alongside all kinds of shenanigans like male dancers with their rear ends out, alien encounters in the woods, and even a night in a haunted house.

The film was incredibly successful, hitting number one in the box office in the U.K, and earning a total of $100 million worldwide. It initially received negative reviews from critics, but many of those re-evaluated their thoughts after re-watching the film years later.

The Spice Girls Might Have An Animated Film

Although the Spice Girls have reunited for some performances, they have for the most part embarked on their own career journeys including making music, hosting or judging shows in the U.S. and the U.K., and creating a sustainable beauty brand.

The Spice Girls are also supposed to be lending their talents to an animated adventure based on their personas. It was reported that all five women are on board with Paramount Animation to work on the film, which is said to include classic Spice Girls tunes along with some newer music.

The project is said to be produced by Simon Fuller, and written by Karen McCuhllan and Kiwi Smith, two writers from the Legally Blonde team. The Spice Girls animated movie was announced in 2019 and has had a hard time finding a director to get it off the ground, with very few details being released about the story, what songs will be featured, or what the animation looks like.

The film is said to turn the Spice Girls into superheroes, and while fans might be imagining a Powerpuff-like plot, they'll have to continue daydreaming for now. After so many years in what amounts to pre-pre-production, it's unclear if the film will come to fruition, or if the former bandmates are still agreeable to working together.
